Lovin' Lynchburg

Now that I am away at school, Lynchburg is my new home for the majority of the year. Having lived here since August, I thought I’d share some of my favorite things about it. If you haven’t heard much about this area, hopefully you find this useful!

1. Community

Lynchburg has a sense of community like none other! Everyone has the opportunity to be involved in some type of group and there’s always people there in support when it’s most needed. The people in this city are nicer and friendlier than any other city or town I’ve visited before (Maryland, step it up). There’s no question whether or not someone will hold the door for you, it’s ALWAYS a given. Everyone is so polite and smiles are worn by all.

2. Churches

It’s not easy to find a “home” church in Lynchburg, for a good reason, because there’s so many to choose from and they are all so unique in their own way. The churches in Lynchburg and the surrounding area come together and recognize that they all have the same mission and they support one another. That’s not something most cities and towns have.

3. “Drenchburg”

If you live in Lynchburg, you know why it has been given the nickname “Drenchburg”. It rains. A LOT. I love it because the rainbows peeking over the mountains at the end are so worth it and I can’t deny that walking through puddles in rain boots is somewhat satisfying for a college student.

4. Sunrises/Sunsets

Being from Maryland, I’m used to flat land so the sunrises and sunsets get millions of times more beautiful in the mountains. However, getting to see a sunrise/sunset on the water isn’t a bad view either (I also have a great view of the mountains and the highway from the back door of my dorm, which makes catching the sunrise/sunset from a good location so much easier.

5. Hiking

With mountains, comes hiking. From Sharp Top and Flat Top to Devil’s Marble Yard, there’s so many different hikes to enjoy close by. These hikes range in the level of difficulty so there’s always something for everyone! Liberty also has a monogram on the side of a mountain and that’s a really short and easy hike (mainly because you drive most of it) but it’s honestly breathtaking at sunset and I highly recommend doing it if you ever find yourself in Lynch-vegas.

“In his hands are the depths of the earth; the height of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land” (Psalms 95:4-5 ESV).
