Memorial Day

My mom reminded me a few days ago how important it is that we don’t “celebrate” Memorial Day, but that we observe it. Yes, there’s a huge difference. Today is supposed to be a memorial, a somber day where we reflect and remember those who have given it all. Coming from a strong military background with family members serving in all different branches, my parents have always stressed the importance of recognizing those who serve our country. To be in the U.S. Military is an honor in itself. It takes bounds of courage, bravery, dedication and patriotism, among other things. You don’t go into the military without knowing there’s a possibility you’ll never come home. It takes a very strong person to commit to such a service and do so proudly.

Unfortunately, there are many who sacrifice their lives in the line of duty protecting the lives of you and I. We may not ever get to personally meet them, but we should be thanking them every day that we wake up in a bed in a loving home with immediate access to our loved ones. This holiday weekend you didn’t see me on a boat, you didn’t see me barbequing, you didn’t see me setting off any fireworks. Why? Memorial Day isn’t a holiday to get rowdy and just have a day off of work. The whole point is to remain somber and actually recognize the reason we are here living the lives we have. I’m not putting anyone down for enjoying their three day weekend but can we at least do so while acknowledging that there are families grieving the losses of their courageous loved ones? Can we think about someone else for one 24-hour period at the very least?

Thank you to the men and women who have served or currently serve our country. Thank you to the ones who put their lives on the line day in and day out defending the country we have the pleasure of abiding in. Thank you especially to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and made it possible for me to freely write this for others to read, rest in eternal peace. Thank you to those who make the opportunities I have possible. Thank you to the families of military men and women, the ones who say the hardest goodbye’s and await the sweetest hello’s, especially to the ones who never got the opportunity to welcome their soldier home.

This Memorial Day, put down your beer, get off your boat, quiet the chatter among your barbeque party and just for a moment, remember those who have given their all.
